Most ambitious project in Russia

The International Competition for Zaryadye Park in Moscow, Russia, the most ambitious in Russia for the past decade, has been officially launched at parkzaryadye.com on April 18, 2013. The deadline for submission of Applications is May 22, 2013. The Competition is initiated by Russia's Federal and Moscow City authorities.

Zaryadye is a unique historic district in downtown Moscow, on the bank of Moskva river, adjacent to the Kremlin and the Red Square. After the demolition of Hotel Russia, the site has remained abandoned for over 6 years. In late January, 2012, it was proposed to turn this 130 000 sq. m area into a multi-functional public park. This challenging project has the potential to be one of Moscow's largest and most significant pubic space development projects in recent decades, attracting much attention both inside and outside Russia.

The aim of this Competition is to develop an Architecture and Landscaping Design Concept that will form the basis for the creation of a contemporary Park with a high quality infrastructure that will be open for the public all year round.

Undergraduate Exchange

Hello, I'm Eduardo. I'm studying architecture in Brazil and I intend to go on an government exchange program ( with length of about 1 year).
I've researched some universities and architecture courses around the world and I got interest in countries like Denmark, England, Japan and Netherlands.
So my question is: which country(ies)/ university(is) would be the most interesting, the most "profitable" to hone my skills and mind as an future architect? Of course not only among these countries I've mentioned, Those are just some I got my eyes at.

Of course, I do know that the student is the one who develops the architect to be. But with good guidance, teaching and environment that development can be boosted to another level.

Our son is accepted into the U of Idaho and is planning on studying Landscape Architecture. What are the benifits of aquiring this degree vs. a landscape designer degree. Do you have to have your Masters before you can be accredited? What kind of salary can he hope to make in the future and what is the need for LA now. I know the Forest Service used to hire a lot of them and doesn't anymore. Any thoughts for us? Thank you...we appreciate it!

How to Get Into an Architecture Program

I know that I've seen a few posts in random areas here asking about how to get into an architecture program (with no answers). So instead of going through and trying to answer all of them. I wanted to consolidate it all into this one (for those that went unanswered, and for future seekers).

To start, it is never too late to get into an architecture program. I remember seeing a few over-40s in some of my classes while I was in. If you aren't over 40, and you're still in high school, then more power to you.

I suppose the application process can be broken down into 3 pieces: the University Application, the Department of Architecture Application, and the Portfolio. I'll just elaborate on each piece.

University Application - You need to do this one first. The requirements are going to vary for each University, but you must be accepted into the University before you can be accepted into the Architecture Program. Most universities require you to turn in your high school transcripts, SAT scores, an essay as to why you want to attend the univerity, and in the cases of an upper-level school you may need to add an interview to all of this.

Department of Architecture Application - Once you have submitted the University Application, you can move on to this one. Usually, you will need to submit pretty much the same thing as you did to the university. But, in addition to this, you will also need to submit recommendation letters (the standard is 2 or 3) and an essay that is determined by the department (this usually pertains to your interest in the program, rather than the university). The portfolio is also part of this process, but I wanted to address it separately because it is one of the most important pieces that you will need to focus on.

Portolio - Depending on your school, you may need to submit certain mandatory pieces. (For example, my school required a self portrait in pencil or ink.) Just remember that anything that is required can also be "adjusted" to display your creative ability. The purpose of your portfolio is to show that you are able to think outside the box. You can use photography, graphic design, paint, pottery, or pretty much anything else to show your ability for creative thought. Most of the times, the portfolio will consist of 10-14 pieces. My recommendation is to start taking some art classes to get your creative juices flowing.

You can search for it in Amazon, or you can follow the link at the bottom (I'm not sure if the moderators will allow links; that's why I say to search for it on Amazon). A great failure in modernism

I have posted an analytical essay on one of the basically irrefutable verdicts on modernism. Modernism fails to invite people into it's buildings. Whether in an obvious, "this is the entrance" expression or in human scaling at the curbside, Chicago towers have evolved by adding what modernists didn't address...Entrances that invite people in. Sketching Is Our Tool.

Sketching is the lover of any art forms greatest tool. In fact, without it, how can the brilliant ideas of the mind get translated into something everyone else can begin to understand? Here is a link to a sketching exercise I did for an hour or so where I began with the grand elevation that a Greek Temple of Classical Architecture’s Era would look like. Then I massaged it extemporaneously into an abstracted form with a collonade free standing from a reduced, off-centered and angled structure behind. Finally, I arrived at a playful set of six light beacon columns on oval-ized pediments and planters in front of a fluid, lighter structure that is seemingly the antithesis of the rigid, symmetrical Greek Temple. Ironically, the final sketch is just the progression from the ancient architecture of the world. It is different (maybe even bad for your taste) but then again, sort of the same. Architecture and buildings are evolving. But you would probably be surprised how many things are staying much the same.

This exercise and the general thought is based on a recent editorial written by Michael Graves in the NYT. Many are already discussing it in the light of computers making it possible for the non-sketchers to be involved in rendering. I think creative minds should have a creative hand in architecture....afterall...what if the power is out??? I expounded a little bit on the topic at my website.
