Architectural schools teach architectural design, mostly done in a studio type of setting. As I am graduating on this topic I would like to ask you: What is architectural design to you? And why is it necessary to learn it through studio education?

Personally I like the website of http://www.unstudio.com/ because of the large images and multiple ways in navigating through their port-folio. But I think they have placed a bit too much of their work on their website. I wonder if a client or future client will ever go through all of your work on your website. I don't think they will take the time, so therefore I believe the port folio should be small and only contain the work you are proud of.

Considering the rate of change and opportunity in the last few years, it is a very relevant question whether the studio is still the best method for architectural education. However, it is tempting to pick an answer which is not ripe yet and undervalue the joy, the drive and energy which can be generated within the studio. Above all, architecting contains joy to me.

Architectural design is concept. It is a provocation intended to make people consider new ideas and push their limits just that little bit further. It is a chance to experiment with new technologies and new philosophies that change with changing times and mutating societies. Architectural design reflects who we are, where we come from but mostly where we are going without being particularly restrained by the "real" aspects of actually executing a project. Architectural design is pure and unconditioned. It is the starting point of a top down process which results in a built construction that may not necessarily reflect the original idea but that aspires toward it...and that is what promotes evolution.

@ Violeta, Nice blog! I would like to see some of your schoolwork on it... I like your view towards architectural design.

@ Hamholterburger, Why would you question the studio method for architectural design education? It seems to me this is the most effective way to really grasp the essence of design. It's a process that has many different ways and outcomes. Your fellow students, teachers, co-workers, bosses, etc are your most important source of information. You can't learn how to design when you are isolated from other people. It not something "universal" that you can learn by reading books. Could you clarify your questioning of the studio?

I don't consider the architectural education i've had, as a reliable one. And it was the worst case of studios, I mean if studio design is good, mine was probably only the bad part of it.
But then I tried analyzing, why don't we all get better and grasp the essence of design? why do we act like we're doing "associative writing" or just expressing irrelevant feelings through our sketches?
And I guess a need that rose while thinking made things clearer, i felt like i wanted some lego cubes and a wide space to build by trial and error. I wanted to feel the model grow between my fingers and watch it either work or not.

Architectural design is mainly a concept played by forms, lines, solid, void, etc with respect of many realative circumstances and values and obviously studio method is the best.
