As a first year student of architecture department,, i faced a lot of problems..
so, i'm here asking for your helps guys..

it's all about:

1. Design Concept: what is it exactly? how to come out with it ? how to relate it with context?

2. Design Approach: did not get the meaning of this at all !!!

3. The Design of Exterior and Interior. how could it be ? in which shape it should follow?

4. Floor Plan: is there an instruction for this?

and many other problems that usually all first year students face it.

however, providing an example with your explaination will be more useful

1. Design Concept for me is like a theme in a poster making contest , this were i base my designs
2.Design Approach - I dont have any idea
3.Design interior & exterior for me is how you understood your design concept , as my professor says "every word in your design concept has an equivalent shape"...
4.Floor plan = making a floor plan is converting your experiences and what you have learned to a drawing/plan ... ex. size of doors , size of windows, size if rooms , wall thickness etc...

Design approach i think this based on client or whatever you want to achieve at the end of the day let it be a hospital School, fire station, prison. wherever kind of facilirties.
Design Concept, as my lecturer every design has its concept. there's material concept this involves the type of material u want to use, there's site concept involves topography and site layout, there's plans this involves plan layout some design something that looks like octopus, spider Whales etc

CONCEPT is a product of initial imagination as to how(most-likely)my solution will be prior to the study phase.APPROACH are preliminary considerations taken during study phase as to which given requirements are being tackled to be resolved.EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR are both design aspects where emphasis on the character of the structure is consistently focused as to what it is supposed to convey.FLOOR PLAN is the inner arrangement of the building cognizant to the need, flow of activities involved, behavioral and cultural agenda of occupancy, all this with respect as to how it would appear on the outside when proposal is turned to reality. EXAMPLE:church project whereas CONCEPT is to come up with a VERTICAL structure as a projection of spiritual upliftment APPROACH given a square lot of which a typical basillica dont fit,my design approach is of an amphitheatre type the altar at the core radiated by the pews all around. With both concept and approach now in sight INTERIOR AND PLAN is clear that must be solemn in atmosphere, ambient lighting EXTERIOR to reflect a central spire of the cross from altar through the apex of roof signifying the religious faith it represents.

Concept is central idea or theme of any project . but how to reach the central idea. is this spontaneous like it will click in your mind as intuition or is it product of very good analyisis. please reply to this then i will discuss further.i do not want my own mind to impose on you.

Design Concept; there is no way to "exactly" determine what that is or where the inspiration will come from for every project. Each new project presents its own set of unique objectives and parameters. Don't think of these parameters as "problems", think of them as opportunities!

There are the obvious requirements for every project, i.e. the function or program, contextual relationships, etc. Then there are always the less obvious opportunities that the project presents, maybe a unique site context, a view, or even something that you bring to the equation. What makes a great architect is the ability to evaluate, manipulate and incorporate all of these into a design. Of course, everyone is different and everyone has their own strengths and abilities.

Your challenge as a student is to develop your own set of tools and skills that allow you do put all of those elements together and create your own great designs. No two architects do this the same way because no two people are the same.

I guess my point is: Have fun in school, use the time and the theoretical projects presented to you as opportunities to help you develop your own “design approaches”. From there the concepts, interiors, exteriors, floor plans and everything else will fall into place.
